Spectacle Magazine

Project Requirements:

You must first come up with your own magazine title and concept. Once this is done you will begin developing a look for the nameplate that will appear on the front cover. Do not use an existing title. Consider a subject that you are interested in and go from there. Look around at existing publications to identify trends and the design qualities that they possess. Once you have your identity established you will then create a cover, table of contents, and one spread for the publication. Your spread will be the feature story. There should be, throughout the work, some indication that everything fits into the identity and layout of the same magazine.

Reflection:

For this project, I chose to create a celebrity interview magazine. I wanted to incorporate my love for movies and pop culture into this project so I focused on the Oscars. I found inspiration in magazine companies like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Interview magazine. I wanted to understand the industry standard for magazine design but also wanted to create something uniquely me.

This project challenged me to develop effective hierarchy on the cover page, because it sets up the entire magazine. I found the table of contents to be the most difficult spread. I wanted to create a unique design, but the amount of information required posed the biggest challenge. Overall this project allowed me to practice attention to details and hierarchy.
